 Kenji Tomiki 

9th Dan Aikido, 8th Dan Judo

 

Visited the Earth from March 15, 1900 to December 25, 1979.

Founded Tomiki Aikido and the Japan Aikido Association (JAA). Kenji Tomiki is an author of numerous books on Aikido, Judo and self-defense.
Kenji Tomiki was a member of teaching staff at Aikikai Hombu dojo till 1960.
Was born in Kakunodate, Akita Prefecture. In 1906 started to learn Japanese Fencing. So he learned not only Kendo, but also techniques with Bokken. At the age of 10 started learning Judo from Jigoro Kano (founder of Judo).

In the summer of 1926, Tomiki first trained under Morihei Ueshiba.
He was awarded Judo 5th Dan by the Kodokan in 1928.
In 1935 Professor Kenji Tomiki opened 2nd Aikido school in Kakunodate. Hideo Oba became his main assistant, who was also trained by Professor Morihei Ueshiba. In 1938 he was invited to start his own school at Kenkoku University. Kenji Tomiki was once again supported by Hideo Oba, who was the one who helped Tomiki make his ideals of Budo real.

Tomiki was 1st Ueshibas student, who was awarded the first aikido 8th Dan on 11 February 1940.

In 1940 by the order of Kenkoku University Kenji Tomiki and Hideo Oba went to China to teach fencing and fighting with several opponents, Aikido and Judo techniques. After returning to Japan he continued developing Aikido and Judo at the international level. He became a Professor at Waseda University, where he established the Waseda University Aikido Club in April 1958. Thus he started teaching foreigners.

Tomiki was awarded 8th Dan in Judo by the Kodokan in 1964. In the early 60’s Professor Kenji Tomiki developed a method of competitive trainings Toshu Randori-ho, which he taught in addition to traditional forms of Kata. Later trying to develop practical use of Aikido techniques, he created a modern technique Tanto Randori-ho - a combat, when one wrestler is armed and the other one is unarmed.

 

Nowadays Tomiki Aikido is practiced in all clubs and colleges of Japan and is becoming more and more popular in Europe, the USA, Brazil and Australia.


Kenshi Uno

 8th Dan Aikido, 3rd Dan Kendo


Was born on November 22, 1941. Graduated from Waseda University.

 

Kenshi Uno was working with the former Prime Minister of Japan Keizo Obuchi in Aikido Club of Waseda University for 2 years.

 

He studied Aikido directly under Kenji Tomiki’s leadership. Lifetime director of the Japan Aikido Association Shikoku Hombu.

 

Kenshi Uno is a Technical Supervisor of our Federation.
